Description: A treelet to 7 m, without spines; leaves paired, petiole to 4 cm, blade to 12 x 35 cm, glabrous, oblanceolate to elliptic, usually widest beyond the middle, often asymmetric,apex acute, base acute,midveins and lateral veins expressed above, lateral veins 10-14, tertiary veins impressed above; inflorescences short, 1-4 cm, opposite the major leaf; flowers to 15 mm across, corolla white, anthers yellow; fruit subglobose, to 18 mm long, yellow-green, glabrous, seeds bean-shaped, not flat.
Local distribution: Atlantic slope from lowlands up to 1400m; Pacific slope wet forest from 900 to 1500m.
Species range: Mexico to Ecuador
Habitat: Light gaps and stream margins in mature forest, secondary forest, forest edge, clearings.
Phenology: Flower: feb-may (most of year). Fruit: feb, apr-dec (most of year).
Seed dispersers: Bats, and possibly certain birds.
Comments: Sometimes lumped with the distinctive Solaum brenesii.
