Diagnosis: Understory palms with short or underground stems, unarmed, leaves pinnate with leaflets in a plane and varying in width, the inflorescence with a deciduous terminal sheath leaving a circular scar below the rachis.
Local Distribution: Cloud forest on both slopes and Alantic slope rain forest.
Diversity: 3 species.
Comments: These understory palms closely resemble the species of Geonoma that lack upright trunks. The sheath scar on the inflorescence is the best indicator, but non-reproductive individuals can usually be identified by the secondary veins being expressed above in Geonoma and flat in Calyptrogyne.
