Astrocaryum Arecaceae

Diagnosis: Large palm in swampy soil, stems with persistent petiole bases, pinnately compound leaves more than 2 meters long, leaflets in a plane, whitish below, long flat spines on leaves, dense slender spines on fruits.

Similar Genera

Local Distribution: Swampy areas on the lower Atlantic slope up to 750 m (Poco Sol).

Diversity: 1 species (Astrocaryum alatum).

Comments: The seeds are edible with a texture and flavor similar to coconut. We have seen this species growing just above 750 m elevation near Laguna Poco Sol.
