Wingspan: 50-52 mm




Identification: Smaller than P. artena, costa of dorsal forewing entirely black, hindwing fringe scales black, postdiscal bar wide, M2 all black.

Local distribution: On Pacific slope at 1100-1500 m; Atlantic slope at 700-1200 m.

Abundance: Uncommon

Comments: This species needs more study to determine if it is a form of P. artena associated with wet habitats (see DeVries 1987) or a distinct species. I have commonly found it to be sympatric with P. artena and consistently different in wing shape and pattern characters at Monteverde.
