DescriptionTall deciduous fern with sterile and fertile leaves (fronds). The spores are initially green then turn a cinnamon brown and the entire fertile frond withers after the spores are shed. The sterile fronds persist all summer and have a distinctive wooly tuft of hairs at the base of each pinna (leaflet). The fiddleheads of this fern are covered with silvery hairs.
