Diagnosis: Large rain forest trees, with small free stipules, leaves opposite or whorled, entire, with a collecting vein, showy yellow zygomorphic flowers.

Similar families
Caprifoliaceae: no stipules, leaf thin with 1-2 pairs of marginal teeth.
Rubiaceae: interpetiolar stipules present.
