Identification
  - Leaves simple, alternate, entire, with stipules.
  - Aromatic odor.
  - Large white flowers with 6 free petals solitary at twig tips.
  - Fruit cone-like with small, individually dehiscing, 1-seeded follicles.

Diagnosis: Trees, with stipules, leaves simple, alternate, entire. 1. Stipule fused to petiole leaving a long scar on petiole when lost (Talauma). 2. Long, ficus-like deciduous stipule leaves a circular scar on twig, leaf pale blue-white below (Magnolia).

Similar families
Lauraceae: without stipules.
Moraceae: white latex.
Winteraceae: leaves white below.
