Identification
  - Leaves simple, alternate, entire, spiraled.
  - Without stipules.
  - Aromatic odor.
  - Twigs irregularly ridged and grooved (asymmetric cross section).
  - Small flowers with 6 tepals, anthers with pollen pockets.
  - Fruit fleshy with a basal cupule (most) and one seed.

Diagnosis: Trees, aromatic odor, without stipules, leaves simple, alternate, spiraled, entire, pinnately veined, rarely 3-veined.

Similar families
Annonaceae: leaves distichous, bark stringy.
Ericaceae: lacks aromatic odor.
Sapotaceae: white latex, twigs round, flowers in axillary groups, not on inflorescences.
Winteraceae: leaves white below.
