Identification
  - Weak-wooded shubs, herbs, and epiphytes.
  - Leaves simple, opposite, entire or serrate.
  - Without stipules.
  - Leaves at a node often unequal in size.
  - Flowers tubular, often reddish, with four joined anthers.
  - Fruit a berry or capsule with many small seeds.

Diagnosis: Treelets, without stipules, leaves opposite, pairs often unequal in size, simple, entire, fleshy texture, no inter-petiolar ridge, orange tubular flowers.

Similar families
Acanthaceae: stems swollen above node, leaf pairs more equal in size.
Verbenaceae: twigs cuadrangular.

Diversity: Total: 20 genera, 61 species. Treelets: 1 genus, 3 species.
