Identification
  - Margin of leaflets with spiny teeth - Short spines (4-8 mm) on petiole
  - Lleaflets with stiff plastic texture

Diagnosis: Short-stemmed, unbranched palm-like treelets to 4 m tall; leaves pinnately compound, petiole and margin of leaflets with short spines, leaflets with stiff plastic texture; flowers and fruits on a dense cone-like structure.

Local distribution: Atlantic slope rain forest up to 800 m.

Comments: Two native species occur in Costa Rica.
