Identification
  - Palm-like growth form, stems unbranched.
  - Leaves pinnate with short spines.
  - Leaflets with spine-like teeth on margen.

Diagnosis: Treelets, prominent leaf scars on unbranched trunk, leaves alternate, pinnately compound, leaflets with spine-toothed margins, petiole and rachis with short stout spines.

Similar families
Arecaceae: leaflets without spines on margin; if petiole spiny, then spines long and slender.
