Identification
  - Leaves simple, alternate, enire, distichous.
  - Persistent brown stipules.
  - Small, white flowers in leaf axils.
  - Fruit an oblong red berry with one seed.

Diagnosis: Small trees, with semi-persistent glabrous stipules, leaves alternate, distichous, simple, entire, may have vernation lines or wintergreen odor in twig.

Similar families
Chrysobalanaceae: bark sandy when rubbed between fingers, stipules thread-like.
Euphorbiaceae: leaf base asymmetric, stipules deciduous, clear sap in petiole.
Ochnaceae: margin serrate, strongly arcing lateral veins.
